توسعه اقتصادی فرآیند بهبود تدریجی شرایط زندگی مادی افراد است. در سطح کلان اقتصاد توسعه تلاش می‌کند دلایل سطح بهره‌مندی بالای برخی از کشورها را کشف کند. در سطح خرد اقتصاد توسعه کارکرد بازارهای مختلف را در کشورهای در حال توسعه با هدف یافتن راه‌هایی برای کاهش فقر بررسی می‌کند. تقریباً همه مباحث اقتصاد نظایری در اقتصاد توسعه دارند که در فهرست عناوین مطرح در این درس خود را نشان می‌دهند.
شرایط کشورهای در حال توسعه چالش‌های جدی برای مدلهای متداول اقتصاد ایجاد می‌کند. بنابراین با آنکه مدل‌های پایه‌ای اقتصاد نقطه شروع مناسبی برای تحلیل‌های توسعه هستند اما شرایط کشورهای در حال توسعه نیاز به تدقیق و بررسی فروض این مدل‌ها و پیامدهای نقض این فروض را روشن می‌کند. برای مثال، اینکه چرا فقرا به اعتبارات بانکی دسترسی ندارند و باید از وام‌دهندگان غیررسمی با نرخ بالا تامین اعتبار کنند نیازمند تدقیق در فروض مدل‌های بازار اعتبار است. در این مثال نقش پررنگ‌تر عدم‌تقارن‌های اطلاعاتی و مشکلات اعمال قراردادهای رسمی احتمالاً دلیل چنین مشاهده‌ای است.
اهداف این درس عبارتند از:
  • طرح و آشنا کردن دانشجویان با مباحث اساسی در فرآیند توسعه اقتصادی؛
  • تقویت توان دانشجویان برای کاربست مدل‌های اقتصادی در مطالعه مسایل توسعه؛
  • طرح و بحث انتقادی ادبیات تجربی مربوط با نگاهی به سیاست‌های اصلاحی.
